What is Astragalus?
Shen Nong, the father of Chinese herbal medicine , discovered astragalus or Huang Qi around 5000 years ago. Traditionally, in Chinese medicine, it has been used to treat night sweats, loss of appetite and energy and diarrhea. Chinese herbalists found the herb brought balance the body systems. It was good for treating lung and spleen issues. By balancing the body’s systems, the herb was believe to build up energy and prevent disease. Throughout history the herb has been used by folk medicine practitioners in Europe and the Middle East and several Native American tribes to relieve a whole host of medical issues from treating tumors, relieving constipation, back pain and chronic coughing to treating skin conditions.
Today, astragalus is being studied and used for several practical applications. Many medical practitioners have recently become interested in the possibility that astragalus might lessen the side effects of chemotherapy, help treat HIV and other immune system deficiency based illnesses. Others are studying the impact of astragalus and how it prevents damage to the liver and kidneys and how it stops diabetes. (MDidea Extracts Professional)
From an anti-aging perspective, the UCLA AIDS Institute study conducted in 2008 found that a chemical from the astragalus can prevent or slow this progressive telomere shortening. Telomere shortening is related to aging process. Preventing telomere shortening would significantly halt the aging process. The UCLA scientists isolated a chemical they call TAT2 from astragalus and found that it did enhance telomerase activity and antiviral functions. Chinese scientists also produced a study isolating two isomers from astragalus and documented the slow down of telomere shortening rate, the reduction of DNA damage, and the improvement of DNA repair ability.
The studies prove that astragalus is a key herb essential for staying young and healthy. Astragalus is considered safe for most adults.
